Christmas in California

Our trip to California was beautiful and filled with family. We danced at weddings, ate at our favorite restaurants, watched old Christmas movies, opened presents, took naps and spent time with old friends. It was everything you could want out of a Christmas vacation.

I've been having fun playing with Instagram on my new phone. These are some shots of California on the Newport Ferry, the Newport Pier and a trip to Crumbs Bake Shop in LA with some girlfriends.

We're back in Hawaii now (after a couple of airline fiascos). I am doing graphic design from home now and obsessively nesting around the house. Tyler is going to school and working, but we are enjoying the time we have for breakfast together each morning before he runs off for the day.

Our baby is due in a little more than 3 weeks. We are trying to enjoy these last moments with just the two of us, but can't help but be excited to welcome our 3rd family member!

Ihave one more week left until I finish my reliable full time job. Since we'regoing to California for a few weeks, the baby comes shortly after our return andthen we move to the mainland 4 months later, quitting made sense. It alsodidn't make any sense at all since my job is currently the sole source ofincome for our growing family while Tyler goes to school.

I'vebeen pondering this upcoming change a lot lately. One day I feel extremeexcitement for a future full of motherhood and my own creative pursuits and thenext day I’m absorbed with fear that my family may starve to death.

That’swhy the saying “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” has been my mantralately. I think Tyler and I are pretty smart people (at least Tyler is) and I know we can use our skills to makesomething work for us. But what are my skills? Definitely a passion forcreativity (is that a skill?), as well as graphic and accessory design. I’mexcited to spend the month or so before the baby arrives working on my businessand growing my brand full time. Maybe even having a few accessory designs ofmine manufactured? (see above designs)

Ihave a lot to learn about being a business owner and even more to learn aboutbeing a mother. Everything is new a scary and the future is unknown. However, Ifeel that with the combination of our faith and determination to make itwork, things will turn out for the best. I’m sure there will be many roadblocks along the way, but nothing we can’t handle....right? Gulp.

This video is from our beautiful Thanksgiving last year. I especially enjoy the shot of Tyler at the very end. We are blessed to have friends as talented as Nate & Katie of Kinfolk Magazine and Jane & Conor of Jane Reaction, who coordinated and decorated the event. The beautiful video was created by Spencer of Kylie & Spencer at The Flybird. I am grateful for talented friends who inspire me to pursue my creative dreams.

This Thanksgiving will be a little less fancy, but we did cook our turkey wrapped in tea leaves in the imu at the farm behind our house. I can't wait to eat it with a few good friends during our Thanksgiving celebration today.

Today, I give thanks for:
- My handsome husband who works so hard, yet still makes time to be silly with me.
- Our little baby boy on the way who loves to kick all the time!
- Living in beautiful Hawaii near so many great people from all over the world.
- Our plans to go home for Christmas and see our family! (ridiculously excited for this one)
- Being the author of my future and the many possibilities it holds.

Hey World,

So you may or may not have noticed that I've been m.i.a. in the blogosphere lately and I have two completely valid excuses for that:

1) I didn't feel like it.
2) I'm pregnant.

So I feel pretty good about those reasons. Hope you didn't miss me too much. And if you didn't already know I was pregnant then...SURPRISE! Also, its a boy. He's going to be awesome! We are now accepting name suggestions (that aren't ridiculous like Buckminster or something).

Otherwise, life has been the same as usual. I finished teaching the fashion design class which was a blast. I'll post about that later. Tyler is busier than ever with school, working in the athletic training room and now volunteering at the local hospital. Does this man ever slow down? He also turned in his first round of applications for med school and responses are slowly trickling in from each school as to whether or not they are interested in having him submit his secondary application. Fingers crossed!

I've been busy too; working in the BYU-Hawaii University Communications department full-time, working on my etsy shop and graphic design biz at night and also growing a baby. Most of the time though I'm day dreaming about the baby and who he'll look and act like and then forgetting what I'm supposed to be doing or why I walked in the other room.

I'm not going to make any grand promises that I will update this blog everyday, but I will try to make more frequent appearances to update you on baby news, SleepyDreamer news and life in Hawaii.

Fashion Design Class

I'm so excited to announce that I will be teaching a Fashion Design class starting next Wednesday, June 15.

I will share my experience in fashion design in the action sports industry where I worked previously as a men's and women's accessory designer for La Jolla Group.

Students will learn the process of taking your designs from trend concept to actual design to physical product within each season. Students will choose their favorite brand (or create their own) and design a small line of clothing/accessories. In the process we will learn all the terms and other important details. We will touch on other aspects of the action sports industry including graphic design, sales, marketing and production and what steps you need to take to get jobs like these.

This class is great for high school ages and up. No experience necessary.

Four weeks long. Wednesday nights from 6-9 PM at BYU-Hawaii in Laie. Contact Educational Outreach for details.

The IOU Project

Have you heard of The IOU Project? It is a new clothing company with a unique plan. It starts with artisans in India who use hand looms to weave unique textiles. They then send the textiles to Europe where designers and craftsmen sew them into stylish pieces of clothing.

New Designs

You may have noticed that I have been a bit M.I.A. on the blog lately. Well, that's because after work and on weekends I have been working my bum off designing wedding invitations, wedding maps, RSVP cards and save the dates.

Being busy is great news of course, as it means my business is growing and developing. I am having fun developing my style while also filling the needs of my clients. I'm ready to take my business to the next level and may be making some changes in the near future!

Meet Gramma

If you ever get to meet Barbara Haug, consider yourself blessed. I won't try to describe her or make a list of her amazing qualities because it would be long and overwhelming. Just know that everyone that meets her instantly loves her and she is known worldwide as "Gramma". I have been thinking about Gramma a lot and what a fun loving, happy and unbelievably kind woman she is.

Recently I've had this strong feeling I should write down her life story and make a biography/photo book of her life. My family has been scanning her old photographs over the past few years and I asked my mom to send me some to help me form the shell of her life story for the book.

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago Gramma had a stroke and is having a very difficult recovery in a rehab center at the moment. She can't seem to get her words right and seems very confused and uncomfortable. I wish I could be home with my mom to help take care of her and calm her down when she gets upset, but since I am an ocean away, I've been thinking about her a lot and keeping her in my prayers.

I thought I would share some of the photographs of my stunning grandmother as well as some quotes from a little question and answer book I once gave her for Mother's Day.

Question: What were some nicknames that you had.
Answer: Bo Jean and Bobbity Dean Donuts

Q: Describe the dumbest stunt ever pulled by you and a friend.
A: I was about 9. Dotty Johnson and I decided to run away. My mom helped me pack and waved goodbye. Dotty and I started walking into the desert east of Barstow. As the town disappeared we sat down until dark and then walked home.

Q: Tell about your first kiss.
A: My first boy-girl on the mouth kiss was in the senior play "The Campbells Are Coming." As part of the play, Howard Johnson kissed me. Everyone teased about how we'd need to practice every rehearsal. So I asked the teacher, "Is it sanitary?" She said, "No."

Q: Describe a place you liked to be alone.
A: I loved climbing my Grampa's Ethel (?) Trees and licking the salty needles and feeling the warm sun. Also, there was an Indian path into the desert in front of our Valley Avenue house. Under the brow of the first hill was a circle formed of rocks. It was hard to see anyone there. It was a haven for me. An ancient Indian look out spot.

Q: Is there anything you would do differently as a teenager?
A: I might actually kiss a boy just for fun. I'd try not to entirely believe my father when he said, "If you're ever seen sitting in a parked car with a boy, your reputation will be ruined forever." I'd not be a "loose woman", just a little more receptive or, let's face it, not quite so mean to boys that liked me.

Q: What was your first job?
A: I worked for Lonnie Vincent at the Balboa Pharmacy. I was a "Soda Jerk." I made malts, sodas, and sundaes etc. It was the summer after I graduated from high school and we moved to Balboa (1944).

Q: Do you have a story about standing up against odds for something you really believed in ?
A: Nothing big and noble. I have always tried to stand up for anyone who is not there, but being talked about. I have discovered that gossip is a bonding experience for many. Not going along is an unpopular stand. Defending is a reflex. I can't help doing so.

I love you Gramma! Thanks for teaching me to be happy, to enjoy being young and playing make believe. Thank you for trying to teach me to be nice to everyone and for being such a good influence on so many people.

We pray for you every night.

The Sounds of Music Inspiration

I've always loved the Sound of Music since I used to watch it at my grandma's house as a little girl. It's so cheerful and motivational and makes me want to spin around on a beautiful mountain sing! I used to pretend I was Liesl when she sang in the gazebo with Rolph and I got so excited when Maria made the children matching outfits out of the drapes.

Also, is it just me, or does this movie totally remind you of the holidays and bring out the Christmas spirit in you?

Once I got to visit Salzburg, Austria (where it was filmed) with two of my best friends Robin and Emily in 2005 when we backpacked through Europe. We stayed in a hostel where they showed The Sound of Music every night and in the morning we would sing "The Hills are Alive" at the top of our lungs in the shower room. During the day we would explore the beautiful city and lush green hills. We even climbed a mountain to an ice cave and ate schnitzel in a woodland cabin. No joke.

I've been particularly obsessed with the movie since I saw the 45th anniversary Sound of Music Special on Oprah. It was fun to see the grown up versions of all the Von Trapp kids and hear them share their behind the scenes stories. The actress who played Liesl confessed that at the time of filming she had a huge crush on Christopher Plummer who played Captain Von Trapp (and I don't blame her).

So in honor of my latest obsession I put together a little Etsy Treasury for inspiration that is filled with Maria's favorite things. Hope you enjoy!

Wedding Shoot with Natalie Norton & Hearblack

I had the amazing opportunity to work with the fabulous Natalie Norton and my good friends Katie and Nate of Hearblack on a wedding style photo shoot.

Natalie gave me free reign to dream up this imaginary wedding and I had a blast doing it. I will be the first to admit that it was a lot of work (especially when all my resources were an hour drive away), but the multiple trips to Savers and the printer paid off. I was so happy with the results and of course Natalie captured our mini wedding perfectly. Though it is basically impossible to capture a bad shot of this beautiful couple. The love they exude makes me happy!

I think my favorite part of the shoot was making the cute little accessories and paper goods. I am particularly fond of the labeled tea bags. What a fun way to do name cards!

The customizable invitation design is also available at my shop and I am considering offering little flags too.

I also have a new found love of table design. How cute is that tea set I thrifted? I decided I was too in love to return it to the thrift store, but tragically dropped and shattered the whole set on the sidewalk while bringing it home! Single tear..actually more like a flood of tears. (Don't worry I'm ok now :)

Meet my Amazing Mother

Did I ever tell you that I have the best mom ever? I'm not even joking.
I will be amazing if someday I am half the mom she is.

Here are some things I love about her:

* She is super silly and playful
* She makes up cool words like "fliberdy floob"
* She NEVER gets mad
* She makes up silly songs while she is working
* She NEVER thinks about herself
* She doesn't worry about what people think
* She was converted to the LDS faith when she was 18 and is the only member in her family
* All of her children are LDS
* She raised my three brothers and I by herself (with some help from Gramma!)
* She is incredibly patient
* She has been teaching special education for 30 years in the NMUSD
*She currently teaches adult special ed students life skills like taking the bus and having a job
* She spoiled me
* She is one of my bestest friends
* She gives you exactly the right amount of sympathy and then helps you fix the problem
* She is optimistic
* She taught me to laugh at myself
* She taught me to sew
* She gets me
* She gives good advice and knows when you don't need it
* She put up with my crazy teenage years

Another great thing about my mom is that she is uber creative. When she was in high school and college she had two dresses that she alternated between for dances. She redesigned them every time to add a little variety. Here are some pics of her in those dresses with my cute dad.

I remember her sewing a lot when I was younger and redecorating the house. She made me these awesome MC Hammer pants and several of my all time favorite "circle skirts". They made me feel pretty.

Our 1 Year Anniversary!

So I'm totally behind in blogging this, but Tyler and I recently celebrated our 1 year anniversary on August 22nd! I still can't believe we've been married for a whole year.

For our special day, our family friend Susie reserved a beautiful timeshare for us in Waikiki. The place was amazing.

We ate dinner at PF Chang's that night with an old gift card and used coupons for free desserts. We felt so fancy and didn't even have to spend any money.

After dinner we went for a walk on Waikiki and stumbled upon a firework show.

We walked through the Royal Hawaiian hotel where I became overly excited and crazed about how old and ornate the hotel is.

"Wouldn't it be cool to stay here?" "What if you could go back in time and see Waikiki when this hotel was the only one here?" "Look at these amazing hand carved doors!" "The girls bathroom is amazing! It has a powder room." "Tyler, take a picture of the boys bathroom for me!"

Tyler was so kind in putting up with me :-). Luckily he found some authentic vintage surfboards to drool over.

To top it all off, we stumbled upon an exhibit of recently discovered Amelia Earhart photographs from her visit to the Royal Hawaiian in 1934.

The next day was Sunday and was our actual anniversary so I gave Tyler his "paper" gift.

We went down the street to the Honolulu Tabernacle for church.

We had a blast during our mini vacation in Hawaii that weekend playing Waikiki tourists. It was so nice to have time away from everyday life in Laie to appreciate each other and the world around us.

I'm so thankful for you Tyler!
You make me better.
I admire you.
You make life fun.
You are my best friend.

I can't wait for future years and adventures together!

Super Saturdays

Yesterday's Adventure

Yesterday I decided I needed to enjoy the sunshine and get outside. I read a book I checked out from the library under a big shady tree.

I read until I was no longer aware that I was reading.

I loved being outside and feeling the breeze. I loved the sound the trees made in the wind. The trees were talking and calling me into the forest.

I ignored them at first, thinking it probably wasn't wise to listen to trees.

But soon their calls became too loud to ignore and I followed their voices into the forest.

I found a path and decided, "this must lead to my destination." But the path didn't seam as if it ended anywhere. I walked for hours, getting further away from home with every step.

I walked and walked until I couldn't walk anymore. The trees were no longer calling my name and their branches were blocking out the sun. I was lost and alone.

I was mad at myself for being so stupid. I sat down on a nearby rock to ponder what I should do.
I read my book again, hoping to find some answers.

Daylight was fading and the forest seemed to be laughing at me now. I knew there were monsters lurking around corners and hiding behind bushes. They waited for darkness to fall before they made their move.

I needed to escape. I began to run, looking around my shoulder occasionally to make sure I wasn't being followed.

Then I tripped.....

...and woke up under a shaddy tree.

Thank goodness it was all a dream.

Taking Action!

First of all I just love anything Zooey Deschanel is in, but her role as Allison in "Yes Man" is by far my favorite. The movie has a great message about taking action in your life, trying new things and doing what you love.

Allison is in a band called Munchausen by Proxy. The band wears crazy costumes and their lyrics are silly and straight forward. I love how the band is not phased by the fact that they only have 5 fans, but they're in it because they love it. Check out the movie clip of her band here.

What was most inspiring to me in the movie was Allison's side project leading a photography jogging group on weekly jogs around Griffith Observatory Park. She recognizes that there is not a huge market for blurry photos taken while running, but the group loves doing it anyway. I love the idea of combining things you enjoy together and making something out of them, whether or not other people perceive it as successful.

On another note, I recently discovered the amazing CraftyPod and listened to a Podcast interview of Scott Belsky. Scott talks about how there are so many ideas in the world and not enough action. He talks about ways creative people in particular can start organizing their thoughts and being more active with their ideas.

I've recognized in my life a lot of input and absorption of information: reading people's blogs, checking up on facebook, reading emails, reading books, watching movies, listening to the radio (loving This American Life!) and watching TV. Sadly though, I don't create hardly enough output. I've got a lot of ideas and not much action. I hardly ever write my ideas down or even verbalize them.

I'd love to be able to look back on my life and say that I accomplished things that I had dreamed up. I think fear of failure always holds me back, but I'd much rather know that I've tried something than wonder what it might have been like. I want to do things Allison's way and act upon my ideas whether or not they are received well by others.

THEREFORE, I have decided to take action. I've sewn two purses this week and have resolved to start blogging more often. I need to spend more time in my life doing the things I enjoy, even if that means pushing myself to do it after a long day at the office. So I guess I really will be a Sleepy Dreamer; pursuing my dreams even to the loss of sleep.

I hope you all will join me! Let's leave our mark on the world.

Life is just a bowl of cherries

I've been a bit negative lately. Not really out loud, just internally. But I've been thinking... when you really look at it, life is pretty awesome. Why do I spend so much time focusing on the things I don't like? Just to remind myself, here is a list of the things I love about my life:

1) My wonderful husband who is responsible and hardworking, yet still likes to be silly with me.
2) This beautiful island that we live on. I forget about this one sometimes. Hello?
3) I have a job! Which I would have died for a few months ago.
4) Kind and supportive family and friends.
5) A friend I can always rely on- my Heavenly Father.
6) An endless world of possibilities and wonderful things to look forward to.

Today, just to break up the monotony, we decided to have a picnic during my lunch break. We set up under a tree right behind our apartment. I found this simple image reminding me to enjoy the day.

Life is just a bowl of cherries.

Gwen's Birdie Birthday

Have you met my uber talented friend Fani of Fani J. Foto? She basically oozes creativity (and I mean that in the least gross way possible). She plays piano, sings and writes songs, draws, sews, takes beautiful photographs and is a mother.

Sometimes she lets me hang around her and absorb her awesomeness. I even get to babysit her two adorable girls on occasion.

Recently, her younger daughter Gwen turned two and had a "Bird Birthday". Since I new it would be awesome I brought my camera and snapped a few photos of all the cute handmade details. There were bird decorations and gifts left and right and there was even a bird egg hunt.

The kids all had a blast and the grown-ups did too. Thanks for sharing your creative ideas with all of us Stefani!

Life Lately in Hawaii

Hey friends and fam! I figured you're probably tired of hearing about my silly crafty ways and want to know what Tyler and I have been up to lately. So here is the run down of the last couple of months:

Tyler and I had our 6 month anniversary at the Cheesecake Factory in Waikiki.

I made the waitress write Happy 6 Months on our cheesecake plate.

The next morning at 4 am I got a phone call from Robin who said there was a tsunami warning and she was leaving town with her roommates. So we packed up and drove to higher ground.

Here's our packed up apartment.

We drove up to Gunstock Ranch where there were hundreds of cars and we all camped out.

Everyone hiked up the hill a little further for a view of the ocean and waited for the tsunami to hit.

and waited ... and waited ... and waited.

We saw some pretty interesting things in the mean time.

-Including lots and lots of cow poop (apparently we were parked in a cow pooping field)
-A man in a gorilla suit playing frisbee with children in cow poop field
- A mini praying mantis
- A man walking a bunny on a leash

Tyler also took this awesome picture. When he took it, I told him pictures without people in them are boring, but this one is awesome.

Tsunami day sounds kind of exciting, but mostly it just looked like this picture below. Thank goodness the tsunami never really hit the islands.

I also started a new job a few weeks ago at BYU-Hawaii which we are so thankful for, but sorry Gramma no pictures of my office. I thought it might be awkward to bring my camera to work on the first day.

Last week we went on a hike.

We saw this driveway on the way up the mountain. Do you think this is the way to Laie Falls?

I love the grammar on these signs and how this guy puts random "quotes" around some of the words like Joey on Friends. I also like how he says you WILL be shot, but he's not sure so he adds the question marks at the end. Ok, I better stop or this guy might find me and "shoot" me??? Haha.

I like this tree house. Even though it says there's a mean dog and the fence is electric I was still tempted to go climb on it.

We found this nest on the ground.

We didn't make it all the way to the top so we stopped half way and had an orange picnic. Is it a picnic if all you brought was an orange?

Later that same day we went surfing with our Friends Chris and Dana.

It has been a great few months! We love our apartment, but are getting ready to move again into campus housing. We finally got in after a year of being on the waitlist!

Meet Annette and Tori- at the Orange Cirle

Sorry it's been a while since my last post. It's hard to find the time with my new full time job. That's right a new job! It's great news and definitely a blessing, but also a little sad that I won't have as much time to work on my crafts and photography. I'm going to do my best though to keep up on the things I truly love.

This blog is dedicated to following my dreams and I'm not going to quit! Even if I'm not sure exactly what my dreams are yet. I'm still trying out new ideas and I'll be posting about them soon.

But right now check out these two adorable girls, Annette (3) and Tori (7). Could they be any cuter? Colorful Craft Time

We like to do a lot of painting at the afterschool program where I work here in Hawaii. The kids have tons of fun with their creations. I love to watch the how easy it is for them to pick up a brush and paint the first thing that comes to their mind. The crazy part is, the end results are usually great! It reminds me to take the stress out of artwork and enjoy the process more. These kids certainly do.

This day we painted pet rocks. Once the rocks were finished, the kids just kept on painting whatever they could find, specifically the butcher paper that we taped to the table. I think it turned out beautifully. Jackson Pollock has nothing on these kids!

Inspired By: Sherri Dupree Bemis

Most of my passion for art comes from seeing (or hearing) the beautiful things that other people create. That's why I've decided to do a series on people who inspire me; aptly entitled "Inspired By". My mind is kind of a mush of all of these inspirational people and ideas and in an attempt to express and understand myself, I've decided to share the mush with everyone. I'm so excited to share this first one!

One of my most favorite Inspired By's is Ms. Sherri Dupree Bemis. I first discovered Sherri my last semester of college at BYU-Hawaii in 2005 while editing photos for my photography class. I was listening to internet radio that sunny day in June and heard the ethereal harmony of the band Eisley. The song "Marvelous Things" basically became the soundtrack to my summer of 2005. To me it represented the beauty of Hawaii with a twist of sadness (since I would be moving home soon) and an endless opportunity for the world I would create for myself after graduation.

Sherri is not only a singer, songwriter and guitarist in my absolute most favorite band, but she is also an artist and photographer.

One of my favorite things about all of Sherri's work is the fantasy world that it creates. Its almost like I can see the world she imagines through her work and I want to get lost in it, like Alice in Wonderland. This world is especially apparent in her drawings. I love the crazy characters that she makes. I wish I could draw like this!

Oddly enough I am very attracted to the dark twist that all of her work features. It makes that fantasy world all the more intriguing.

A Few of My Favorite Things- Necklace Pendants

I didn't mean to keep you guys in suspense for so long over my latest project! I know you probably lost a few hours of sleep over it in anxious anticipation. So without further delay I reveal...

"A Few of My Favorite Things" (in charm form of course)!

All of these necklace pendants hold an image of one of my favorite things. I love hot air balloons (though I have never been in one), vintage cameras, traveling (globe), DINOS!, owls, those hipsters on their fixed gear bikes, and the girl image was a drawing that I did in my last art class that I love. I had more image ideas that I didn't have time to create, so hopefully there will be more of these little charms to come in the future.

I learned a lot about resin and types of glue throughout the process and had so much fun making them! I bought my kit from AnnieHowes on Etsy.

I highly recommend the Resin Pendant Kit, which is what I used, but I opted to create my own images rather than use the paper she provided. I'd love to try the glass pendants next.

I hope you guys enjoy these as much as I enjoyed creating them. They are all now available at the SleepyDreamer Etsy Shop.

Meet the Kendrick Family

I was so excited when Heidi asked me to take pictures of her family. We met up in downtown San Juan Capistrano a few weeks ago and I was blown away by how much fun they all had together and how comfortable they were in front of the camera.

It also didn't hurt that the family is just so darn attractive. But, most importantly their love for each other was obvious. The four sisters are good friends and you could just tell how much they admire their father. He was cracking jokes left and right and making everyone smile. I had such a hard time narrowing down my favorite photos for the blog!

Thanks guys for inviting me to capture your beautiful family and thanks for being such a great example of family love!

Designing Your Own Wedding Dress- a DIY Bride's Dream

One of the most fulfilling projects from Tyler & I's wedding was getting to design my own wedding dress. It was so fun to have the image of what I wanted it to look like come to fruition. Not only that, but it was made for me!! Extra height and flat butt already accounted for.

I didn't start out knowing that I would have my dress custom made. I thought it would be too expensive and time consuming. My mom and I went to quite a few wedding dress boutiques where I tried on dresses with price tags twice the size of the entire wedding budget. Either that or they were 100% generic and boring. Also, it was near impossible to find a dress that covered my shoulders and back.

I'm not sure why I thought I would find my dream dress lying in a store somewhere. I've always had issues shopping for dresses. Proms and Winter Formals were torture for my mom as I dragged her on a fruitless journey from store to store to find the perfect dress. Of course, that perfect dress only existed in my imagination or on a sketch pad somewhere. So it just made sense when I started sketching my wedding dress and researching seamstresses. I mean I like to sew and all, but didn't quite feel up to the challenge of sewing my dress while wedding planning.

I started by remembering the types of dresses I liked the most while shopping. I also looked at a lot of wedding dress websites for cute details and trends. I finally made this simple sketch of options on illustrator:

I found the perfect seamstress, Susan Dressmaker, on yelp.com who had great reviews and gave me a very reasonable quote for my dress. I decided on my ideal dress and made this mini design tech sheet to give to Nina, the seamstress.

Its always a good idea to at least provide a photo so the seamstress has a better idea of what you want.

Nina gave me some suggestions for fabric stores to check out and I went on a hunt for the lace and liner I wanted for my dress. I think some more expensive dressmakers may provide fabric for you, but I preferred to pick it out myself anyways.

Here are some of the great fabric stores in the LA/OC area of California:

M & L Fabrics- Anaheim: Amazing selection in general, but not a lot of lace. Great Prices.

Michael Levine- LA Fashion District: HUGE selection in general, but not a lot of lace. Great Prices.

F & S Fabrics-LA: Lots of lace and other fabrics to choose from, but a little on the pricey side. This is where I found my satin liner for below the lace layer.

Mood Designer Fabrics- LA: Yep the one from Project Runway, but the LA location. Big selection with big and little prices. This is where I found my lace!

I brought my fabric back to Nina, she took my measurements and got started right away. Make sure to make frequent visits to your dressmaker to ensure a correct fit. Also, bring the undergarments you will wear on your wedding day and your shoes so the length is correct.

I was very happy with the results of designing my dress and it was very satisfying for me to be a part of the creative process. Plus, it was only around $500.00 when all was said and done!

I fully suggest designing your own dress to all you designers at heart. There is some work and research involved, but for me it was totally worthwhile.

Meet this beautiful baby girl. I had the opportunity to meet Aleena and her parents Erinn & Ryan while I was in CA over Christmas break. I believe she was about 5 days at the time of our photoshoot and too sweet for words. I'm so happy that Erinn & Ryan gave me the opportunity to take pictures of their little angel. I hope you like them!

I've been thinking a lot lately about this strong desire that I've always had to create things and how to satisfy it. Especially during this new phase in my life, it doesn't seem like there is much room for artistic expression and not much appreciation for it in the world around me. When funds are tight, and time is money, I guess I should be spending my time more productively. But when I lay my head down at night on a day filled only with my jobs of cleaning houses and after-school programs I think something is missing. I think, I could have made something new today and someone could have enjoyed it. Deep down I know my desire to create is a blessing from God and I need to utilize it in a way that is meaningful, not only to myself but to others as well.

On top of it all I have been wondering, what should I be aiming my creative interests towards? There are so many ways to express yourself. Are some more influential and far reaching than others? At my old job as a designer I knew I was spending my days creating things, albeit things that weren't quite my taste, but still it was satisfying to know that those purses and wallets didn't exist before and now they are out there in the world and people like them. After Tyler and I got married and moved to Hawaii, I was optimistic about the endless opportunities I now had to spend my time creating things that I liked. After a few months of testing the waters to see what it was I wanted to spend my creative energy doing, I am still as lost as ever in this sea of possibilities (as is apparent by my scatterbrained etsy site). What am I even about? Sewing? Paper-goods? Photography? Music? I love them all, but are they making any difference in the world around me? I feel like I want to center on one or two specialties and run with them so I can grow and improve and share new ideas with the world.

Then again I have always had issues with knowing what I wanted to be. In high-school I wanted to be a surfing cheerleader in a punk band. Then I wanted to be a folksy singer/songwriter fashion designer dancer world peacemaker FBI agent. Needless to say it is obvious that I enjoy too many things for my own good. Now I am excited to be a good wife, financial supporter and someday a mother, but until the mother part kicks in I'm a little lost about how to be a creator. I guess I'll just keep testing the waters until I find what's right for me.

How-To Make Your Own Labels

I saw this fabulous idea on makesomething.ca and thought these little labels would be a great addition to some of my crafts. So I bought 1/8th yard of vinyl backed canvas [upholstery section] and dragged out the vintage typewriter that we used as the guestbook for our wedding. This little label making project could add big love to any handmade creation.

I suggest practicing your typing skills on a piece of paper before you load the fabric into the typewriter to prevent wasting fabric. Once you've decided on your type look [Caps? Spaces between letters?], just load the fabric into the typewriter the way you would a piece of paper and type away. Then cut them into strips and sew them onto your goodies!

[FYI- So far I have only attached these lovelies to my purses, so I haven't tested their washability. You may want to sew a label to a scrap of fabric and throw it in the wash before you sew it to an item that will need washing.]

Meet the Adorable Ayden

As you know, I had the opportunity to meet with many beautiful people over Christmas break to take some pictures and work on my photography. I had so much fun getting together with old friends and spending quality time with family at some of the prettiest locations in Orange County, CA.

I was surprised at how many people were interested in taking pictures over the holidays, but then again who doesn't love free things, right? So I had 8 photoshoots over the break and learned a ton about posing, lighting and am now tackling the editing. I get excited everyday to work on my editing. I hope you guys like these pictures as much as I have enjoyed creating them!

My first session was of my old friend Taylor's son Ayden. How cute is he? I can't even take it.

He was such a good little model, he even pulled off Blue Steal!

Free Photo Sessions in Orange County, CA

I've decided I'd like to work on my photography while Tyler and I are home for Christmas. I'd love to do a photoshoot of you and your family or you and your loved one within the next two weeks. I am offering totally free sessions and photos, in the Orange County area, in order to get some practice and build my portfolio. I will shoot and edit the pics and send you a disc of your pictures for free.

I know its a busy time of year, but its also a time when the whole family is together and a great opportunity to shoot some pics. The sessions will last anywhere from 30 min to 1 hr. I have some ideas for locations, but would love to hear your ideas too. Or maybe you have a spot that is special to your family?

How to Sew a Tote Bag- Perfect Christmas Gift!

I've been sewing up a few little goodies for my next Etsy shop update and falling in love with these clear vinyl covered tote bags. The clear vinyl gives the bag a cute shiny look similar to that of oilcloth, but vinyl is a little friendlier on the wallet.

These bags will make the perfect handmade Christmas gift for some of my friends and family and the best news is that they're budget friendly! I'm so happy about them, I thought I would share the love with everyone and teach you all how to make your own. Let's get crafty!

P.S.- Leave out the vinyl in these instructions for a more organic and simple look.

P.P.S- If you don't have the crafty bug like me or don't have the time, check out my Etsy shop for some already made bags!

Materials:

sewing machine

scissors

sewing pins

cut 2- 15" x 15" squares out of fabric of choice for outside of bag (will be called fabric "A")

thread and bobbin to match fabric "A"

cut 2- 15" x 15" squares out of fabric of choice for inside lining of bag (will be called lining)

cut 2- 15" x 15" squares out of clear vinyl fabric (vinyl gauge- 0r thickness- is your choice, but remember lower gauges are easier for your machine to sew- I believe I used 10 gauge)

cut 2- 15" x 15" squares of tissue paper (usually comes with the vinyl)

cut 2- 1/2 yard poly webbing at 1" wide or larger for handles

Step 1
After pressing and cutting materials, cut 1.25" squares from the bottom two corners of all layers, including: fabric, lining and clear vinyl. As shown below:

Step 2
* Set the two squares of fabric "A" side by side with right sides facing up. Layer one square of clear vinyl on top of each square of fabric "A".
* Layer a square of tissue paper on top of each square of clear vinyl (you will see why soon). You should now have two piles with tissue paper on top.
* Take the two piles and sandwich them together with the tissue paper in the middle and fabric "A" on the outside (wrong sides facing out).

Step 3
* Line up all edges and corners of the pile (the tissue paper is used here to prevent vinyl from sticking together).
* Pin two sides and bottom edge as shown below:

Step 4
* Sew 1st side seam from top of bag to bottom with 5/8 seam allowance.
* Repeat with 2nd side seam, also sewing from top of bag to bottom.

Step 5
* Sew bottom edge of bag with 5/8 seam allowance.

* Bag should look like this when finished with step 5:

Step 6
* Put both hands inside the sewn bag between the layers of tissue paper.
* Pull apart the two side walls near the corner as shown below.

* Line up side seam and bottom seam and pin the corners as shown below:
Step 7:
* Sew corners with 5/8 seam allowance:
* Bottom of bag should look like this once both corners are sewn:

Step 8
* Turn bag right side out and remove tissue paper to make sure all seams look good.
* Find center of bag at top edge and mark with a pin.
* Pin handles to outside of bag at top edge, be sure to only pin through first layer of vinyl and fabric "A".
* Handles should be pinned approximately 2" from each side of the center pin.
* Make sure handle isn't twisted.
* Handle edges should hang over the top edge about 1/2".
* Turn bag over and pin handle to other side too.

Step 9
* Take two squares of lining fabric and sandwich them with right sides together.
* Repeat steps 3-7 with lining fabric.
* When finished, you should have what look like two bags with unfinished top edges as shown below
Step 10
* Turn lining inside out and pull it over the outside of bag made from fabric "A", as shown below:
Step 11
* Pin top edge of lining to top edge of bag "A", making sure that centers and side seams are lined up

Step 12
* Sew top of bag with a 5/8 seam allowance
* Don't sew around entire bag, leave a about 4" unsewn to turn bag right side out

Step 13
* Turn bag right side out through the opening that you left unsewn
* Bag should look like this when finished:

Step 14
* Push lining inside the bag and pin around top edge, paying special attention to and folding over the hem where the seam was left open.

Step 15
* Turn entire bag inside out so the vinyl layer is on the inside and the black liner is on the outside.
* Sew around the top edge approximately 1/4" from the top.
* Use a scrap of tissue paper under the vinyl here to prevent sticking.

Step 16
* Turn right side out again and pull off tissue paper.
* All done! Enjoy your beautiful bag or wrap it up and send it to a loved one!

Hair Cut Experiment

Last night, in an effort to conserve money, we decided I would cut Tyler's hair instead of wasting our $15.00 at the Laie "Haircut Store".

I admit I was a bit nervous and reluctant, since I love his long curly locks, but I think it may have turned out all right! What do you think?

While I was taking pictures, I thought I would take some pics of our apartment that I know our family has been wanting to see. I cleaned it up just for you... just kidding I didn't.

Wedding Video Montage

This is the project I decided to finish at the last minute that kept me up until 3 am the night before our wedding. I created it on iMovie which made everything so easy to do. You basically just click and drag the pictures and music into the order that you like.

My dear friends (and bridesmaids) Robin and Emily stayed up with me and helped me edit it. It was fun reminiscing over memories we had together and making jokes that could only be funny after 1 am. It was so worth it to finish it, since I think the guests really enjoyed it. People spent a lot of time watching the flat screen TV that my step-dad Norm so generously let us borrow and set up for us at this cute little cottage that was at the reception site.

Upon viewing the video again, there are so many changes I would like to make. Lots of things I want to take out (the overload of cheerleading pictures for example) and things I want to add. But no matter how many times I lie to myself and say I'll fix it someday, I know I will probably never find the time.

So without further ado, I thought it might be fun to post it on here to show some of the friends that missed it. I had to divide it into three clips. Please feel free to skim through them as it is kind of long.

Tyler and I are having fun. We went to the Haunted Lagoon last night at the Polynesian Cultural Center with Evan & Darcy and Chris & Dana. I was scared out of my mind a few times. Those swamp things jump out at you when you least expect it! And I still can't believe that the white lady walked on the water! That really freaked me out, I can't shut up about it.

Anyways, I'm off to Laie Elementary's after school halloween bash and I'm in charge of the punch. Tyler is now driving back from the airport on his first day as an athletic team driver. Hooray!

The Invitation

Hey Friends!

One of my favorite parts of planning the wedding was designing the invitation. It was so fulfilling to sketch it out, draw it up on Illustrator and send it to the printer. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I was insistent that the corners needed to be rounded and that the finish was matte. Can you blame a girl for knowing what she wants?

I was so happy with how the prints turned out and they were a great price too. Check out the printer I used at www.smartlevels.com.

Of course I decided that I wanted to hand address the envelopes myself and I searched high and low for the exact white pen that I needed that would be bright enough on the red envelopes (I finally found it at Paper Source). Since I had overestimated my ability to hand address all 350 invitations myself, my amazing family and dear friend did most of them for me (hehe thanks guys!).

I also spent several afternoons driving to various post offices to find the stamps that I liked. I put three stamps on each envelope for a little added character.

I've decided to also add my invitation and announcement passion as an item for sale on my etsy shop as well. It will be posted soon, but for now, I'm off to work!

Green Wedding Shoes

I'm so excited! As I was doing my daily browsing through my favorite blogs on my reader, I clicked on the latest post from Green Wedding Shoes when I noticed this!

Please note our wedding picture on the left! I'm so excited to have our wedding featured on this site, as it was my lifeline for wedding inspiration while we were planning. The pictures and ideas from this site inspired so many pieces of our wedding, so having one of our pictures along side these beautiful weddings is super exciting for me. Just thought I'd share!

On another note, I've decided to finally fulfill my wish to be a crafter and Etsy seller. I've been obsessing over this dream for the last two years and this weekend I decided to make a go of it. While Tyler was busy working away on his homework (he's such a good student) I decided to pull out my sewing machine to make a couple of little creations. I'm so excited to share them with everyone and to make this silly dream of mine a reality. Tomorrow I will take pictures of the new items and post them on here and on etsy.com.

Reception Photo Booth

Something that was important to me as a bride was that there were fun things for the guests to do at the reception. Our reception was held at the beautiful Heritage Park in Fountain Valley, CA. It already had a great ambiance about it, so we only needed to add a few decorations. We had a few games set up at the park, including Croquet, Bocce Ball, Bean Bag Toss, Badminton and a few others. I also really liked the idea of having a photo booth for the guests to take pictures of themselves. Check out these amazing examples at http://www.ourblogoflove.com/index.cfm?postID=393 .

There was a chest of costumes for them to play with too. The kids had a blast with the costumes and ended up wearing them throughout the rest of the day. It was fun to have a superman and pirate running around sword fighting to add to the playful environment. Here are some of my favorite photo booth pics.

Hey Friends and Family! Tyler and I are getting settled here in Hawaii into our new little home. Tyler's busy with a full load of classes and I'm working at an after school program at Laie Elementary. We're enjoying the sun and surf and newlywed life together. I just found out I have the whole week off because Laie Elementary is on Fall Break so I thought I take some time to catch up on my blogging while I search for a second job.

I am so excited to share that we just got our wedding pictures in the mail last week! I'm so happy with how they turned out. The photographer is Trever Hoehne for anyone who is looking for a fabulous photographer.

I had so much fun planning the wedding and getting into all of the little details that I'm going to be blogging about the planning process in the future. I would have done it while I was planning, but there just wasn't enough time!

Mental Break

Planning a wedding and getting ready to move, combined with a full time very deadline focused job is exciting, yet exhausting. I found this video today and it helped me to relax. I can't wait to move to Hawaii! I could use some more of that relaxed island lifestyle. I'm going to take a week off when we get there to unwind and surf my little heart out. Then the new challenge will begin... finding a new job and starting our new little life.

Well I have a lot of catching up to do on my London excursions with Grandma. It's been an action packed few day and Grandma hasn't missed a beat.

Tuesday morning the three of us went out to breakfast at the "Orrery Epicerie" for breakfast. Grandma and I then took a walk through Regent's park which is in Kevin's backyard. Grandma loved the trees that were turning color and all the different types of roses. They were all labeled and had crazy names like "Sexy Rexy".

Then we met up with Kevin's friend Jane who is from England and took us on a tour. She is quirky and fun and I swear she is a walking encyclopedia. She knows everything about the history of England which makes sense since she writes travel books for London tourists. I loved absorbing all of the information from her. I have this weird obsession with old buildings and history. Its crazy to me that the world carries on, but the city looks basically the same as it did hundreds of years ago.

First she took us to Big Ben and the Parliament and then across the street to the Westminster Abbey:

Jane said Big Ben is actually the nickname for the bell inside the tower and that the tower's real name is St. Stephen's Tower. You can tell parliament is in session if either the flag is up in the day time or the tower is lit up at night.

This is where coronations are held and many kings and queens are buried here. Also, Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Charles Dickens are buried here.

Then we walked down Whitehall Street and saw the serious guards that wouldn't smile. We walked past Trafalgar Square and to the National Portrait Gallery to this amazing cafe with a beautiful view for tea!

It was definitely foggy London town- true to form- but you could still see almost everything, including Big Ben and the London Eye.

After tea we walked through the National Gallery and saw some amazing pieces of art, including Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" and some of Monet's Water Lilly series. Beautiful!

Then, since Jane is a pub connoisseur she took us to "Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese" which is the most typical old town London Pub from ancient times you could imagine. Look at this pic I took of the dark bar and the sad old man. I'm kind of proud of it. Poor man.

This is a pic of the wall of the pub. Apparently the guy in the painting on the right wrote the first English dictionary and was a local here at the pub back in the day.

After this we met up with Kevin in Soho at his office where he showed us some of his clips from the upcoming Bond movie that he's been working on. The visual effects look awesome. He showed us all of the cliff hangers so now I'm dying to see the movie!

When we were leaving the office we got in the elevator with the Director of the movie and introduced ourselves! Afterward, we ate at a cute Thai place in Soho where I fell in love with Sticky coconut rice and my baby tea cup.

And then we were spent. We took a cab home and hit the sack! Its been a great trip so far and there is so much more to show and tell. Until then!

Day 2- walk-a-thon

Hey Everybody!

Its Tuesday morning (I think. I'm getting confused) and I'm up before everyone else...weird. Yesterday was fun/exhausting. Kevin wanted me to rent a phone, but had to go to work so Grandma and I went to the phone shop where they told us they didn't rent phones and to try this other address. The other address was kind of far away, but I didn't mind since it was right by some of the shops Sara wanted me to go to. So Grandma and I walked all the way there to find out that they didn't rent phones either. WE tried a few other places and found out that no one rented phones but you could buy one for 20 lbs, so we decided to call Kevin to see if that was what he had in mind. When we tried to call him we realized we didn't have his phone number and we needed to go back home to get it. I suggested a taxi since it was kind of far, but Grandma wanted to walk so she could see the city.

I think it took us about 45 min to get home where the elevator was broken and Grandma had to walk up all six flights of stairs! We rested and drank some water. Kevin said that buying a phone was what he meant (oh! hehe) so Grandma and I went back to the first shop and got one. Then we caught a cab (even though Grandma STILL wanted to walk) back to where the second phone shop was so I could go to TopShop for work. Grandma was so excited to go shopping with me and pointed out all of the things in the store that were "very Metal Mulisha-y", including a tigerface printed shirt :-). Grandma sat down in the dressing room lobby while I checked out and when I looked over she had a crowd of people surrounding her and laughing and a water bottle that she didn't have before. She makes friends so easily!

Anyways, to wrap up... we got a snack at a fancy cafe and walked around the streets some more and then met up with Kevin and the fancy department store called Liberty that was a few hundred years old. It was amazing and probably my favorite place of the day.

Kevin then took us out to a fancy dinner where I ordered some tortellini. I was wondering why it tasted so good when I discovered that the sauce on it was pure butter....mmmmm.

Anyways better get going everyone is up now wanting to go to breakfast. I'll keep you updated tomorrow.

London Day 1

So this was supposed to be my design blog, but what the heck? London is so inspirational I figured it deserves to be blogged about. So the next few entries will be about my travels in London!

Grandma and I made it here safe and sound. After Grandma almost had a heart attack over forgetting her carry on in Mom’s car when she dropped us off, mom brought it back and we eventually made it to our gate with 2 hours to spare. The flight was 9 hours and I got to catch up on some movies I had been wanting to see (The Other Boelyn Girl -sucked!- and MAde of Honor- ok) and my tv also had sudoku and tetris! best 9 hours ever! I think I even got a couple hours of sleep.

We struggled getting through immigration. We didn’t have Kevin’s address where we would be staying and the immigration guy gave me a huge lecture about how “if one of OUR people tried to come to YOUR country you would never let us in if we didn’t have every detail of information including the zip code of where we would be staying. I’ll let you through on the condition that you promise to have all your information straight next time.” He had a nasally voice like Tim Gun from Project Runway but less gay.

Kevin picked us up and took us on the train and then the tube back to his flat which is gorgeous and I want to live here. Its Victorian and old and has a fancy elevator to get to the 6th floor and is right next to a huge park and has a view! Kevin then took us to afternoon tea at the Wallace Museum which is an old mansion that the the rich owners donated to the state when they past away. The condition was that the house had to stay exactly as it was, with the same pieces of art everything, except there is a cafe in the courtyard inside. I had passionfruit orange tea and a lemon tart and little delicious baby chocolate quiches. YUM! We walked down a boutiquey street and went to a bookstore. Anyways we’re back now and its 7:00 pm our time and 11:00 am your time and I’m exhausted. I need some sleep. I think I’m going to do my shopping for work day tomorrow and then the next few days we’re planning on going to some museums, the London Eye, to see Spamalot and I really want to go see Stonehenge even though its a 2 hour train ride. I don’t care! I want to see it! Grandma wants to too, but Kevin doesn’t recommend it.

Grandma is enjoying herself so far and loving that she gets to spend some time with Kevin. Talk to you soon!
